“The Republicans’ sudden interest in the needs of poor people is heartwarming. It’s also absurd. Where was this concern when they voted against the Earned Income Tax Credit, maybe the single most effective way to help lift people out of poverty? What about when they voted all those times against increasing the minimum wage—another effective way to give people a helping hand? For more years than I can remember, the Republicans have been voting against the interests of poor people. Now, with an election looming, they say they care. What a coincidence.”
